Style Tips

One of summer’s most lasting trends can also be impossibly difficult to pull off. The all-white look is tricky (almost as ambitious as the double-breasted blazer), yet done well is a sartorial statement like no other, reading as confident and sleek. Done wrong, and the shame shall haunt you for life- even after years of impeccable attire.

When aspiring to wear the milky hue, follow our simple rules and count the following editorial as a guide. White is a cool, summery shade and should always look effortless. Fit is crucial so slim and well-cut pieces are essential- too roomy equals disheveled (and not in the good way). Don’t over think it, keep it minimal, and refuse to shy away from adding punches of contrast for personality. Lastly, we cannot overestimate the importance of (fabric friendly) bleach. White should always be white.

Blazing temperatures instinctively force us to gravitate towards textiles that are lightweight, breathable and relaxed; most people stray away from traditionally heavy garments like sport coats- completely counter intuitive attire in sweltering conditions.

Fortunately, menswear designers have become increasingly seasonally savvy, making it their mission to offer temperature sensitive styles to the everyday man. On offer, an array of new blazers that are unlined, unstructured, and feature informal details like functioning cuffs and patch pockets- making them an ideal choice for warmer weather. Check out our sample-selection of exemplary summer sport coats, hand picked by the GS stylists in an well-edited range of hues, fabrics, fit and price points. On or off-duty, looking sharp in scorching heat now requires no effort at all.

Style Guide

Ah, the mysteries of formal wear, to wear a tux or to not wear a tux, that is the question? Before we endeavour to answer that we have to ask a more pertinent question, what is the event?  The key to dressing successfully for any formal event is to identify the occasion, are you attending a high-profile charity gala, TIFF movie premiere, MMVA’s…? Each event comes with it’s own set of rules outlining what is acceptable and what isn’t and knowing those rules is key. Clearly the flexibility in what you’d wear to the MMVA’s is not the same as a black-tie charity dinner where your company has bought a $20,000 table. As such we’ve put together a modern style guide offering everything from a classic shawl-collar tuxedos to dinner jacket combos to help guide you on your style journey. These looks are guaranteed to keep you up to code not matter the formality of your event and remember, “you can never be too overdressed or overeducated” of any occasion.

Upcoming events:

New Arrivals

With the growing popularity of Without Prejudice in our stores, we only thought it fitting to bring in the man himself, Mr. Jason Gerrard, CEO of Without Prejudice to give you a little history on the brand and why it’s one of our fan favourites. As Jason mentions in the video, some of the best things about WP are things you can’t see like the half-canvas lining and sweat guards. It’s pretty much all the “stuff” hiding between the garment you see and it’s colourful lining. However, if what you can see is indication of the level of detail and craftsmanship they offer then you can be quite confident that you’re truly getting a quality product at an unbeatable price.

WP offers that tailored slim-straight look ideal for that athletic guy who’s got that fuller chest, arm and legs. It’s also the only suit brand we carry that offers a Drop 8, which essentially refers to the jacket to pant ratio. Most brands offer a drop 6 or 7 which means that if you’re a 42 jacket you’ll get a 35/36 pant. With a Drop 8 you’d get a 42 jacket with a 34′ pant, giving you that perfect inverted “V” look.
