How to Style an Overcoat

October 25, 2016

An overcoat is a must-have for every professional individual.

This is a PSA for those who don’t wear a jacket between Summer and Winter because they think they’ll survive the chill until they need to throw on their parka. It’s also for the gents who don’t think they can even rock an overcoat.

It has a couple names: wool coat, car coat, overcoat, top coat, dress coat. Whatever you decide to call it- just know you need one.

It works for every man and for more occasions than you may realize. Here are some inspirations:

Style Tips:

  • First and foremost, if you wear a suit, we highly recommend that you own one. It’s dressy, professional, and warm.
  • With that said, it’s not only appropriate with a suit. Pair it with a turtleneck and trousers for social events/parties or a dinner date.
  • Jeans, t-shirt, and a hoodie? Throw an overcoat on it for an instant style upgrade. Easy.
  • Go with a neutral colour so you can get more wears out of it.

If you don’t know about Baldessarini, it’s time to get familiar.

The luxury menswear line hails from Germany and is named after its creator Werner Baldessarini. The fall/winter collection explores the nature, local people, and traditions of Germany.

It’s an exciting mix of nomadic roots and the modern gentleman today. We see a lot of classic coats, jackets and suit pants made of well-made materials, such as solid leather and skins and soft and rough woolens. The brand works almost exclusively with European manufacturers and suppliers to ensure the materials and construction are of the highest quality.

Here are some of our favourite picks from the collection:

Here are 6 shirt and tie combos to make your mornings just a little bit easier.

Silence and Noise

One of the best ways to pick your ties is to pick a colour in the shirt and find it in the tie. In this example, the shirt was quite loud so we opted for the navy in a quiet micro-dot pattern. We’re adding texture but not introducing another loud pattern.

Checks and Balances

Stripes and grid check work really well when the proportions are different. Large stripes on the tie overpower the smaller grid check in the shirt. The brown ties it all together.

Drawing the line

The stripe in this shirt is so subtle you might consider it a solid. The bold graphic print tie reminds us of those epic 80s school photos.

Sometimes a hand stitched dress shirt like these ones from Stenstroms just need a perfect compliment. Tonal grey and blue work perfectly together. Use your colour wheel and pair with a complimentary colour.

How to Introduce Knitwear Into Your Wardrobe

Knitwear is one of those easy pieces so simple that you can forget their style impact. Sportcoats, blazers, and suits can be paired with something other than dress shirts. Start wearing them as true sportswear with sweaters and cardigans. Once you start to wear your blazer more often you’ll understand the versatility of the piece rather than saving them for special occasions.

We’re pretty into leather jackets right now.

  1. They  can be thrown over anything
  2. They instantly make your t-shirt and jeans outfit look bad-ass.
  3. A great one lasts forever.

The downside? Leather jackets cost almost a month’s rent. BUT buying the right leather can last for over 10 years. Remember that a more classic moto style leather jacket will be in style longer than a trendy bomber style leather jacket. Consider it a treat yo self-moment. We also find calculating your cost per wear helps. So obviously this article from the onion had to be shared. We’re team Leather Jackets over Children.

This article from The Onion had to be shared…. we’re team Leather Jackets over Children.

SEATTLE—A study released Thursday by the Pacific Parenting Institute found that owning a seriously cool leather jacket is significantly more fulfilling than raising a child to adulthood. “Our research suggests that the feeling of purchasing a really amazing leather jacket and then proudly watching over time as it gradually becomes broken in and forms perfectly to your body is, by a very wide margin, more rewarding than conceiving a child and then raising it from birth to 18 years of age,” said lead researcher Dr. Marcus Aiello, adding that it was on average 63 percent more gratifying to regularly condition a leather jacket that had awesome vertical zippers on the sleeves than it was to read nightly bedtime stories to a son or daughter.
