Days are diminishing; frost and freeze are creeping near. Fight off the grey and gloom with looks that defy the elements – one shirt, sweater or coat at a time. Outerwear is an essential part of every mans wardrobe which is why we turned to our resident tastemaker and GOTSTYLE founder Melissa Austria to select some of her favourite pieces from this Fall/Winter ’13 collections. But as we all know clothes are only as good as the person wearing it, so we enlisted the help of supermodel Paolo Roldan to bring our fashions to life and the result is this editorial.
Melissa’s back with another great style guide episode. This time she breaks down the fundamentals that every man should know when looking to invest in some great outerwear pieces for the Fall & Winter seasons.
Let’s start of by setting the record straight, “flannel” is a fabric not a pattern. Often times people mistakenly reference flannel to mean any shirt with a plaid or tartan pattern, which is incorrect. Flannel is a soft woven fabric, of various fineness and was originally made from carded wool or worsted yarn, but is now often made from either wool, cotton, or synthetic fibre.
With all the semantics aside we can now talk about other uses of flannel outside of the typical lumberjack persona. The flannel fabric is truly a very versatile garment and with the various twills, patterns and colours available today you can quite literally wear it in any social setting, assuming it’s styled appropriately. To prove this point we’ve put together 3 outfits illustrating 3 common social environments, casual, social and formal to help you think outside of the “style” box.
Meet Floris, the man that is soon to be marrying his long time parter Katie who also happens to be best friends with our in-house stylist Mallory. Floris who’s originally from Amsterdam first met Toronto native Katie in Berlin where they both worked for a major tech company. Unfortunately, shortly after meeting each other Katie got another job offer which caused her to move to Brooklyn while Floris continued his residency in Berlin. Fortunately for them the distance was a non-issue as their love persevered to green pasture leading them to official tie the knot this past weekend at City Hall here in Toronto.
Now let’s talk a little bit about his makeover. So, typically when people come to us for a wedding we normally suggest full suits or tuxedo’s as those are the staples for an occasion such as this. However, in Floris’s case he didn’t want anything too formal or fussy which is why Mallory turned on her creative juices and pulled together this outfit. Simple, effortless fashion with a mix of pieces that Floris is guaranteed to use well beyond his wedding.
