STYLE MANUAL

Selvedge (n,):  or “self-edge” is the edge of woven fabric finished to prevent unraveling which is achieved through a tighter, more dense weave.

Selvedge denim refers to a unique type of selvage that is made by means of using one continuous cross-yarn (the weft), which is passed back and forth through the vertical warp beams. This is traditionally finished at both edges with a contrasting warp (most commonly red); that is why this type of denim is sometimes referred to as “red selvedge.” This method of weaving the selvage is possible only when using a shuttle loom.

Shuttle looms weave a narrower 30-inch fabric, which is on average half the width of modern shuttleless Sulzer looms. Consequently a longer piece of fabric is required to make a pair of jeans from selvedge denim (approximately three yards). – Wikipedia

Press

Last week the city of Toronto hosted our very first Men’s Fashion Week known globally as TOM*. The event was a monumental success and something we are very proud to be part off. Our role the official sponsor of the Fashion4Hope celebrity runway show gave us the distinct pleasure of dressing some of this city’s most beloved celebrities- legendary designer David Dixon, fashion ambassador Glen Baxter, musicians Jarvis Church and Shawn Desman, TV personalities Devon Soltendieck, Tyrone Edwards, Carlos Bustamante and Steven & Chris…just to name a few.

Taking sartorial cues from screen legends like Frank Sinatra and other old Hollywood heavyweights, our feature runway show previewed a wide collection of formalwear, from vibrant sportcoat combinations to classic shawl collar tuxedos. We are thrilled that our sold-out show had the audience on their feet and raised some serious coin for the Fashion4Hope charity benefiting Kol Hope Foundation for Children and SickKids Hospital (GS alone donated $4,000.)

Here is your exclusive behind-the-scenes look at our show.

Trend Watch

In honour of fall’s immanent arrival, we are giving an insiders view of how the GS crew prepares for a new season of style. We are often asked how and why we choose the brands we carry- a common misconception assumes that labels approach us and we merely pick from a handful of samples. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

This video gives you exclusive, behind the scenes access to our Fall 2014 NYC buying trip. Commencing in January (that’s correct- our planning process begins a minimum of six months in advance of any season), we start to research trends, new brands and attend buying appointments. Readers may recall parts of this journey from blog posts that chronicled our three day excursion- including navigating major trade shows (Liberty, Project and Mrkt), not to mention many, many meetings with various off-site vendors.

Buying for any season is an immensely personal process, one that founder, Melissa Austria never takes for granted. Sorting through hundreds of brands and thousands of samples is no easy task- especially when you take into consideration our ultra lovely, loyal and diverse client base- and their unique tastes. Here is what three days in NYC looks like for a veteran menswear buyer.
