There’s a new breed of shorts in town.
Shorts for men are changing. Have you noticed? Walk into any shopping mall looking for men’s shorts and you’ll see the short length has come up quite a bit. This has left guys all over the world asking the question: “How short should my shorts be?”
We’re going to answer that question, but first, let’s talk about why you should wear shorter shorts.
- Shorter shorts will make you look slimmer
- Shorter shorts will make you look taller
- See #1 and #2 … what else do you want– really?!
Shorts for men actually look better when they’re shorter. An extra couple inches’ goes a long way. Check this image out below.
The shorts on the left are below the knee. The extra fabric shortens this guys legs actually making him appear shorter. The width of the short is a lot wider than his legs. With an extra inch or two of fabric on either side! This extra creates the appearance of thick thighs. No not a solution for skipping leg day… it won’t look proportionate!
The new styles of shorts for men are different in two major ways.
- They are cut shorter (most commonly 2-4 inches above the knee)
- They’re slimmer through the leg. The leg holes more closely mimic the shape of your legs. Yes, this means they are tighter, but it no doesn’t mean that they need to stick to you like glue!
How short should you go?
Well, that depends on how tall you are. But, at least 2 inches above the knee is a good starting point. Try on a few pairs at different lengths to see what you’re comfortable in. Once you’ve found the sweet spot you can update your old pairs.
Take your old shorts to your tailor and have them brought up a few inches. Or, with denim or cotton shorts try cuffing them like you would your pants.
Now that you’ve seen the difference a few inches can do. It’s time to find shorter shorts that hit you right where you want them. Here are some of our approved shorter shorts for men.
Gentlemen, it’s 2016 and it’s really time to embrace the shorter swim shorts and allow your thighs to be tanned for once. That is why you’re in the sun, no? Stop looking like a bad American tourist or a pudgy tween, modernize your swim shorts and look like a man.
We’re not talking banana hammock here but try to have the length at least 4 inches above the knee. Keep in mind to go for ones that are trim but not too tight. Long or oversized board shorts have a way of making every man who wears them look shorter and wider than they really are. Don’t you want to look instantly trimmer?

Venroy – Iranian Tile Lined Aussie Swimming Shorts Paisley $145.00 Shop Now
The Venroy trunks have great colour and an interesting pattern but still look masculine. I think any guy would be confident to wear these on their own by the lake or with a t-shirt while by the campfire.
Parke & Ronen – Slim Board Short Blue $138.00
These shorts offer length for the guy who isn’t quite ready to bare his whole thigh in a European cut swim trunk. The pattern also reminds me of Turkish mosaic tiles which could be a great conversation starter pool side. 😉
Ted Baker Boara Par Print Swim Short Cord Tie ASSRT $125.00
I went to summer camp growing up so the reason I enjoy these shorts is purely nostalgic. The pattern reminds me of paddles we used to paint, shellac and then go canoeing with. Ted Baker is a very playful brand and I think they have Hit the nail on the head with this design.

Sol Angeles makes some of the softest cotton t-shirts on the market. This t-shirt is perfect for the guy who wants a fun graphic t-shirt without channeling his inner “Bobby Bottleservice”. In addition to being extremely comfortable the Sol Angeles t-shirts sport a flattering, trim fit and a slightly higher v-neck collar so that you can rock a V without feeling too “on display” and vulnerable.
Alternative Apparel Camo Contrast Crew Neck Tee: $45
Who doesn’t love camo? Alternative Apparel has taken the camouflage shirt and made it more chic and less consignment. With a super soft, pre-washed cotton it feels and looks like your favourite summer t-shirt but doesn’t look or smell like you bought it in the back room of a Kensington market surplus shop. With the fluorescent orange crew neck no one will mistake you for a drill sergeant either. We recommend pairing with a cool khaki short or washed out denim.
